A Winter’s Night: Songs of Evening, Stars, and the Northern Lights

Sacred & Profane Chamber Chorus celebrate their 40th Anniversary Season, Forty Years of Sacred and Profane with the season-opening A Winter’s Night: Songs of Evening, Stars, and the Northern Lights this December. Under the direction of Rebecca Seeman, Sacred and Profane explores secular themes of winter, light and darkness, and natural phenomena through ethereal choral music.

In addition to presenting canonic works by traditional composers such as Monteverdi, Brahms, Saint-Saëns, and Mendelssohn, Sacred and Profane proudly highlights lesser known 20th and 21st century composers from many countries: Pavel Chesnokov (Russia), Ola Gjeilo (Norway), Karin Rehnqvist and Hugo Alfvén (Sweden), Franck Ticheli and Stacey Gibbs (America), and several works by contemporary Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds, whose phenomenal, award-winning music has taken the choral community by storm. Works such as his moving Stars for choir and water-tuned wineglasses, among others, create an inclusive program that feels spiritual without being religious.
